Ministries

Service Ministries, or Outreach, are at the core of who we are as a parish, and how we view our role in the larger community.

Listed below are some of our recent projects, activities, and service ministries:

  • The Community Meal is held at St. John's each month. Twice a year, our parishioners help out with preparation, serving, and clean up.
  • The labyrinth of St. John in the Wilderness is open to the public for prayer and meditation.
  • We sponsor a t-ball team through the Elkhorn Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Trick-or-Treat at the Wilderness is an annual Halloween event.
  • Parishioners contribute to the Elkhorn Food Pantry by bringing donated items to church.
  • Our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, the evening before the beginning of Lent, is advertised to and attended by the public as well as parishioners.
  • Parishioners assist with the Salvation Army bell ringing at Sentry Foods during the Christmas season.
  • We assist with the rotating Walworth County Homeless Shelter when it is in Elkhorn.
  • One loose-plate offering each month is contributed to HOPE, Now, and items are donated for holiday food baskets.
  • We are a participant in the Elkhorn Ecumenical Lenten Luncheons, with our priest as a speaker, and parishioners preparing sandwiches, soup, and cookies, and serving lunches. Proceeds from the freewill offerings at those luncheons go to a designated local charity each year.
  • Our Pet Blessing is held on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi each October.
  • Our annual Christmas Sing-Along is attended by both parishioners and the general public.
  • We participate in community events, such as serving coffee at Harley Fest, hot chocolate at the Christmas parade, caramel apples at Oktoberfest, etc.
  • Our “Raise a Roof” benefit for Habitat for Humanity brings in many people and raises funds for the Habitat house to be built in Elkhorn. Additionally, Habitat for Humanity has a rent-free office located in our building.
  • Each year, we offer Christmas trees and wreaths for sale to the public.
  • The 17th annual “Geraniums on the Garth,” the flower and plant sale which benefits our service ministries, was held in 2009.
  • Something for the Kids” Collections are an ongoing project and benefit families receiving assistance from the Walworth County Department of Human Services.
